John Meletis, Professor of Internal Medicine and Hematology



I was born in Desfina, Fokida, Greece, on 27 February 1946, son of Christos and Ioanna Meletis. Father of two, Christos and Rallou.
I became a physician the Athens University Medical School in 1970, working for the next eight years as a Medical Assistant in the First Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Athens (Dir. Prof. Ph. Fessas). I remained at the university through 1983, rising to the post of University Assistant from 1978 to 1981 and Senior Registrar from 1981 to 1983 and Senior Lecturer from 1983 to 1988. I also became a diplomate of the Greek Board of Medicine in 1978 and a diplomate of the Greek Board of Hematology in 1981, while receiving my Ph.D. from the University of Athens in 1981. I spent the years 1984 until 1987 in France at the Univerite Paris VII working as a University Assistant while attending the Ecole de Medicine Lariboisier-Saint Louis (Unite de Greffe de Moelle Osseuse, Dir. Prof. E. Gluckman). During this time, I continued his affiliation with the First Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Athens, serving in the position of Assistant Professor from 1989 until 1995, Associate Professor from 1995 to 2009. I rose to my current post of Professor of Internal Medicine and Hematology at the School, and Chairman of the Hematology Department, Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit and Laboratory of Hematology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Medicine, Laiko General Hospital, Athens, Greece with professional memberships held in the Hellenic Society of Hematology, the International Society of Hematology, the European Hematology Association, the International Society for Experimental Hematology, The European Group of Bone Marrow Transplantation, The New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for Advancement of Science, International Biographical Center Cambridge England (Book of 2000 Outstanding people of the 20th Century in honor of cervices to education and research, Medal in recognition of cervices to education and research, Medal International man of the year 1997-98, Medal of International Personality of the Year 2001), American Biographical Center (Commemorative Medal for outstanding community and professional achievement 1997, International Book of Honor 1977, Five hundred leaders of influence board 1998, The Research board of Advisors 1997, Medal Honoring community service and professional achievement, Man of the Year 1999, Platinum Record awarded for exceptional performance 2000, Gold Record of achievement in Honor of education and research 2001, Gold Medal for Greece concerning the book Atlas of Hematology 2006), Marquis Who’s Who Publication Board (In the World and in Science), .
I continue my laboratory research on Hemoglobin F, aplastic anemia, nocturnal paroxysmal hemoglobinuria, acute and chronic leukemias, microspectrophotometry, growth factors and bone marrow transplantation, while also providing services to a university outpatient clinic in hematology, and head of hematological department of the First Department of Internal Medicine (Laiko General Hospital, Dir. Prof. D. Loukopoulos). While at the Universite Paris VII, I published two professional monographs, Veino-Occlusive Liver Disease in Bone Marrow Transplantation (Paris 1985) and Bone Marrow Transplantation in Severe Aplastic Anemia (1989).
To date, I have published over 450 works in Greek, English and French, including book publications - The Red Cell Hemoglobin Content of Embryos from Parents with β-thalassemia: A Prenatal Diagnosis of β-thalassemia (University of Athens, 1981); Systemic Side Effects in Hematological Patients (Zeta Publ. Atlas of cells with consensual nomenclature by WP10 Morphology Faculty (member LeukemiaNet EU-project 2009). I have published about 250 papers in different International Journals,books and proceedings, about 270 papers in National Journals,books and proceedings, 130 works published as abstracts in International and National Congresses, and 35 works published as chapters in books. My works are citated in about 1500 international papers.

I have received five First Prizes Awards for best work in hematology (National and European).
My personal Philosophy for success is smooth, quiet, polite personality, hard work, careful observation, perseverance and high humanistic targets.
